I've had lots of requests from people asking me to film a first date make-up tutorial as getting your look right for such an occasion can be tricky. I think that one of the most important things to remember is that your personality should shine through no matter what, so if you usually wear a smoky eye then don't feel like you need to do something different and replace this with a statement lip – if you don't feel comfortable your date will be able to tell!

First date make-up should also reflect the date itself – think about what you are going to be doing, are you going for a walk in the park, a romantic dinner, or a party or club? When you take all of this into account there's no one look for all first dates but one thing I've learnt from experience is that the majority of guys don't like women to look like they're wearing tons of make-up – that means heavy bases and garishly bright lips are out (unless that's your signature look of course!!).

The look I decided to do for this film follows this – I've tried to give lots of generic tips of how you can make yourself look and feel your best, with flawless, glowing skin, full lashes (I've used false ones in the film as my lashes aren't naturally full but if you're not used to wearing or applying them then it might be best not to – again, a first date isn't a time to feel uncomfortable) and natural, dewy lips.

In the film I talk about my Grandmother's make-up related first date disaster story – I'd love to hear any that you might have!

I can’t guarantee that all of the make-up and skincare products I recommend will suit you. I only use products I personally think are good having tried them on myself and my clients but everyone's skin is different and it's possible to be allergic to anything. Wherever possible, test products out on yourself before purchasing.

I only feature products I like, or want to try. The products I use in these videos are either purchased by me or sent to me by make-up companies to use in my professional capacity as a make-up artist for fashion and celebrity photo shoots, red carpet etc. I am also sent products by many of the top magazines to judge for awards.

I do not accept payment and am not sponsored to make any of the films on this channel. Some of the links under the videos and blog posts on my site are affiliated however and as stated before, I only feature products I like, or want to try.

  1. The fact that this video is 7 YEARS OLD but the look does not seem the least bit dated shows how Lisa pays attention to what looks good, and enhances instead of covering. In the words of another makeup master Lord McLean, trends are for the anxious. Thank you Lisa for being someone I’ve looked up to for so many years xx

  2. Okay so one thing i struggle with is how you get that shadow at the sides of your eye that looks like a faint eyeshadow wing by just simply blending because i've tried it twice and i can't do it… it looks nothing like it at all… it just looks like i blended it all across and that's it…

Why doesn't it work? Do you like sweep it so it hits in the corner as your sweeping? and Do you make sure that there is eyeshadow on both sides of the brush? because id LOVE to do this natural crease color as a quick way to do a smokey look and i look fab with a smokey look, before when i used to go to clubs id sometimes put black eyeshadow on and then black eyeliner at the bottom and it looked great with me since i have the eye shape and face shape and i have nice eyes too like deep brown eyes with a hint of hazel like your eyes Lisa so this natural eye or brown eye shadow with mascara would look great on me too, i think the way Kristen Stewart does her eyeshadow would look great as well, i just can't do it for the life of me and the eyeshadow doeesn't go up past the crease far enough. It looks so easy but i STILL get it wrong haha!.

Also Brush Set reccomendation: EcoTools Essential Eyeshadow Set, they are fab brushes and work as well as high end ones and do everything you need it to do, it has a big brush for highlight, natural eyeshadow base or powder, slanted brush for the crease, blush brush, eyeshadow brush and a smudge brush and they have a whole bunch of other brushes too but this is like a travel set too so more mini but it's top quality and it's made with bamboo too.

  3. I've watched this video time and time again just to relax and get inspiration. It's been a long time but I'm finally here because I actually have a first date and I'm beyond thrilled <3

  4. I know I am late to the party, but this video reminds me of one time I wore a light BB with a very little concealer & light mascara, but also a really bright red lip, and a guy friend told me he just doesn’t think I look good with such heavy makeup. The next time I saw him, I had full coverage foundation with “natural” warm-based eyeshadow and the rest of the whole shebang on, so the higherlight blusher contour, but this time with a really natural lip color and he said “See! You look so much better without makeup on”. Of course I had to facepalm my way out.

  5. Love the story from your grandmother. My grandmother met my grandfather on a blind date, and dropped a bowling ball on his foot. He came back for a second date to a carnival where she vomited on him. On the third date, he proposed.

  6. What most men want is for a woman to look beautiful and flawless without having to wear makeup, however we all know that is not how it works. On first dates, I usually don't try too hard. I don't want my skin to look perfect or my eyes to be overdone because that is not how I usually am. I don't want the guy to feel cheated. Of course I still try to make myself look pretty, but it looks pretty much like what I do everyday.

  7. I've got a better technique: wear heavy mascara and red lips for the first date and then this 'no makeup' look plus a really tight smart casual dress for the second date, and guys'll be like: wow you look gorgeous without makeup ;p
